The Great Send Off

On Sunday 7th September 2014 Port Sunlight Museum & Garden Village, working in partnership with the Cheshire Military Museum, plans to recreate the march made by 700 Lever Brothers employees from the factory in Port Sunlight to Chester.

The men who enlisted became the 13th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment, and were said to be the largest group of volunteers from any works in the country to sign up.

If you would like to volunteer to take part visit the website www.portsunlightvillage.com

This list for volunteers will close in Monday 18th August, please register your interest before then. Port Sunlight Museum are also holding regular briefings for volunteers to find our more.

Port Sunlight Lyceum Brass band will accompany the march, along with actors playing the parts of key historical figures, including Lord Lever and giving speeches.

The event has been made possible through a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and support from Merseyrail, who will transport the ‘volunteers’ to Chester by train. Each volunteer will also be given a card with information about one of the original 700 men.

The Trust is also keen to hear from people who are related to, or have information about, any of the Port Sunlight soldiers.
