A Kind Neighbour

He gave me his “war hammer”

I had known Charlie all my life as had many people who went to E L Barlow in Heswall for timber. He was a very hardworking and skilled man who served an apprenticeship to become fully qualified carpenter or “chippy” When I was called up for National Service we got talking about the army and to my surprise I found that Charlie had been in the RFC using his skills to repair aircraft that had been shot up. He was continually amazed and a bit fed up after spending all night repairing an aircraft for it to returned in pieces the next day ready for him to start again! I was amazed to hear of his materials wood, string, glue, canvas and something called “dope” He gave me his war hammer which is still in my toolbox.
