Dunham Massey during WWI

During the First World War, this Georgian house, set in a magnificent deer-park, was transformed into a military hospital, becoming a sanctuary from the trenches for almost 300 soldiers.

To mark the centenary we are turning the clock back. Discover what life was like for the patients and how the war changed everything for those who lived and worked at Dunham. Spend time in the ward, recreation room and operating theatre as you experience the Stamford Hospital as it once was.

The auxiliary hospital in the hall in which 282 soldiers were treated between April 1917 and January 1919. Discover the stories of the Grey family and the soldiers and nurses brought together by the First World War. Spend time in the ward, recreation room and operating theatre and rifle through letters and medical notes as you experience the hospital as it once was.

The Stamford Hospital is open Saturday – Wednesday until 11 November 2014, and will also be open in 2015.
