Thomas was a Fireman and Trimmer in the Mercantile Marine. He would have been moving coal from the hold and feeding the furnaces.

Thomas served on board the SS Lorle, a steam powered cargo ship, carrying iron ore. Lorle was torpedoed without warning by a German submarine UB103 off the south coast. Lorle sunk killing the captain and all the crew on board.

Thomas was killed on 18 June 1918. He was 19 years old.

Thomas is commemorated at the Tower Hill Memorial and the Birkenhead War Memorial in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead.

The Tower Hill Memorial commemorates those in the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars with no known grave.  The Memorial is in Trinity Square, London.
