John Ambrose

John Hugh Ambrose (Amburger) born in Liverpool of Russian and German parents who married an Irish girl and died in 1917

John’s father was a Russian named Gustav Frane Amburger born in Archangel in 1818, John’s mother was Johanna Elize REHQUATE born 17 Jan 1839 in Breitenberg, Germany. He was a qualified Ships Master but was serving as 2nd Mate of the S.S. “Clangula” when it was sunk on the 19 Nov 1917 by U Boat UC 77, Captained by Reinhard von Rabenau.

John Hugh Ambrose had changed his surname by Deed Poll from Amburger to Ambrose in 1901. John married his friends, Clement Butler another Master Mariner from Wexford who settled in Liverpool, sister Catherine Butler, also from Wexford in 1908 and they lived at 17 Albert Road, Tuebrook, Liverpool. They had 1 child which died in infancy.
