Frederick Joseph Haney played for the Sefton Aliens from the 1907/08 season, appearing in news reports for frequently scoring.
His long military career began with the Royal Artillery Force in 1915 where he received the Military Cross for “conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty” through his handling of a heavy trench mortar battery.
In 1918 Frederick transferred to the Royal Air Force and retained his rank. A year later he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and continued to rise through the ranks reaching Flying Officer in 1921.
Frederick was also active during the Second World War and was granted a commission in Class CC as Flying Officer (Honorary Flight Lieutenant) in 1939.
