Soldier and Sailor Richard William Longmaid

Richard was a Gunner in the 1st West Lancs Brigade RFA, regimental number 1551. On 31st August 1915 after 236 days of service, he was discharged under King’s Regulation 392 para XVI (no longer physically fit for war service).

After his discharge from the army Richard served with the Merchant Navy. He entered the Merchant Marine Reserve (whereby a number of officers and men of the Merchant Marine agreed to serve with the Royal Navy under the terms of T.124 agreements, which made them subject to Naval discipline.

Richard was a Trimmer on H.M.S. “Alcantara.” The vessel was converted into an armed merchant cruiser in 1914 and was engaged in battle with armed German cruiser SMS Greif off the Norwegian coast. She sank after being under heavy fire and torpedo detonation.

Richard died aged 21 on 29th February 1916.
