The Life of Joseph Cutler

submitted by Eric Cobb, grandson of Joseph Cutler.

My family were all based in Birkenhead and worked either there or in Liverpool.

Joe volunteered for the Cheshire Regiment in 1917, he was a Private with the 1st/5th Battalion.

Joe was killed in action by shellfire near Arras on 5th March 1918.

I possess letter of condolence written to his widowed mother Martha Cutler by his Sergeant, G.N.Cruickshank, only two days after he was killed, which is very poignant indeed. My research so far has helped me locate Joe’s war grave at Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France. Joe was 35 years old.
