George Atherton survives Gas Attack

George was born in 1885 in Prescot. He married Maud Valentine in the summer of 1914.

He enlisted in the Army the following year on 31st August 1915. He was 30 years old when he went to France on 2nd October 1916.

George returned to England on 27th September 1918 due to injuries sustained through a gas attack. He was eventually discharged from the army on 3rd March 1919 as he was no longer able to perform his duties. His address at this time was 97, Napier Road, St Helens.

Due to his injuries George was classed as being 30% disabled and was granted a pension. He was entitled to the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Silver War Badge. George died aged 73 in 1958.
