Samuel Kewley enlisted in the South Lancs Regiment at Seaforth on 9 January 1915 for the duration of the war. His Official number was 16361. His brother, William enlisted at the same time (official number 16362). Samuel served in Gallipoli and Egypt and ended up in a hospital in India. During this time he kept a diary some of which exists today. He was discharged after serving 2 years and 120 days with the colours and 100 days in the Army Reserve Class P at Shrewsbury on 16 August 1917.
